Skipōn "stick" comes from skēripō "prop", and, by syncope, skērpō, skipōn.

Comment

The explanation of Orion seems here flawed, because the verb σκηρίπω is only attested under the form σκηρίπτω, whereas the verb σκήρπω is not at all attested, and the syncope is not justified, even if others Greek grammarians take up this explanation and develop it.
