Translation (En)

ēbaion "little". Form hēbē "youth", since it is short, it quickly grows and fades away, and by derivation hēbē ēbaios. It is oxytone as gēras "old age", gēraios "old". But others say it comes from * "to go". If it comes from *, baios "little" and ēbaios, by addition of /ē/. If it comes from hēbē "youth", *hēbaios and baios by dropping <the /ē/>

Comment

The adjective is derived from the Homeric form ἠβαιόν "only a little", by dropping the initial vowel. It is a reversible etymology, as ἠβαιός is sometimes derived from βαιός by addition of /ē/ (see ἠβαιός / βαιός). This ἠβαιόν is itself assumed to be a derivative *ἡβαιός "youthful" of ἥβη "youth". This derivation implies that ἡβαιός should have a rough breathing, this is why it was rejected by many Greek scholars (Etym. Gudianum)
