Quotation

Βάναυσος· πᾶς τεχνίτης διὰ πυρὸς ἐργαζόμενος. βαῦνος γὰρ ἡ κάμινος […]. εἴρηται δὲ παρὰ τὸ τὰς βαύνους αὔειν, τουτέστιν τὰς καμίνους καίειν

Translation (En)

Banausos "craftsman": any worker using fire. Because baunos means "furnace". And it comes from "to heat the furnace" (baunous auein), that is, to burn the fire.

Comment

Compositional etymology. The second syllable is assumed to be the verb αὕω and the structure of the compound is the usual structure OV. The first syllable is assumed to have been modified by loss of the [u]. This etymology is opposed to the derivational one favored by grammarians (Tryphon, Philoxenus) (see βάναυσος / βαῦνος).

Modern etymology

Unknown (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

In MG, βάναυσος keeps the derogatory meaning "rough, vulgar".
