Quotation

Ὁμοῦ βρίθων ῥοῦς ὄμβρος ὑψόθεν ῥέει

Translation (En)

The rain (ombros) flows from above, a heavy (brithōn) flow (rhous) together (homou)

Comment

Compositional etymology with three words. To an older etymology ὄμβρος / ὁμοῦ + ῥέω is added βρίθω in order to account for the [b]. This agrees with the fact that ὄμβρος refers to a heavy rain. Only the [b] of βρίθω is kept.

Modern etymology

Unclear. Lat. imber "rain" belongs with Skt. abhrá- "cloud" and cannot be directly compared with ὄμβρος. Loanword or contamination?

Persistence in Modern Greek

Yes, as a learned word for "rain". The usual word is βροχή
