Compositional etymology inferring from the rocky nature of the soil that it is not suitable for agriculture. It is a very rare instance of a privative compound in which the privative prefix ἀ- is assumed to be the second member (for similar examples with νη-, see σελήνη / σέλας + νη-, χελώνη / κέλλω + νη-).
