Modern etymology
Probably derived from *wegh- "to carry on a vehicle", belonging with ὄχος "cart", ὀχέομαι "to drive", ϝέχω "to carry". From *wogh-(s)lo- (Beekes, EDG)
Persistence in Modern Greek
MG still has όχλος "crowd" as a learned word

Comment
The etymology probably results from a contamination with a different etymology, maybe the etymology of ἀχλύς "mist", which was sometimes assumed as the etymon of ὄχλος (see ὄχλος / ἀχλύς) and was itself etymologized by εἰλύω/εἰλέω "to wrap", from which εἴλω was not separated.
