Modern etymology
Within Greek, ἀρείων belongs with ἄριστος, ἀρετή but has nothing to do with Ares. PIE root *h2er- "to adapt" (Beekes, EDG)

Although ἄρειος (Hom. ἀρήΐος) and ἀρείων are both derived from the name of Ares by Greek scholars, they are most of the time considered two independent derivatives. Here, ἀρείων is apparently derived from ἄρειος, as its comparative, unless one must understand that ἐξ οὗ refers directly to Ares and not to ἄρειος. Reversible etymology (see ἄρειος / ἀρείων).
