Competing with the derivational etymology through "hide" (see δαρθάνω / δέρμα), this one parses the word as a compound of δέρας + τίθημι, thus accounting for the θ of δαρθάνω, δραθεῖν. The first element is identified as the rare and poetic δέρας rather than δέρμα, which would have implied a formal manipulation, dropping of the [m]
