Comment
Ἔμπλην is derived directly from the verb *πέλω with a prefix, rather than from the simplex πλήν, because of the semantic difference between πλήν and ἔμπλην. *Πέλω is assumed to be the etymon of πλήν, so this was not a problem for Greek etymologists, since both forms do go back to the same etymon. What changes is the derivation: instead of *πέλω > *πλῶ → πλήν → ἔμπλην, the chain assumed here is *πέλω > *πλῶ → ἐμπλῶ → ἔμπλην (explicit in the Et. Magnum)
