Modern etymology
Both ἐρέσσω and ἐρετμός are derived from the stem of ἐρέτης "rower", from *h1reh1- "to row", cognate with Lat. rēmus "oar", Engl. row etc. (Beekes, EDG)

MG still has ερέτης but has lost the -mo- derivative

Correct derivational etymology. There was a discussion on the problem of the consonant. Some grammarians assumed that the /s/ of ἐρέσσω was changed to /t/ (Orion, the Byzantine Etymologica), while others assumed that the derivatives preserved the original /t/ of the verb (Eustathius), lost in ἐρέσσω but preserved in Attic ἐρέττω
