Ἔριθος: Σημαίνει τὸν ἐργάτην καὶ τὴν γυναῖκα τὴν ἐργαζομένην τὰ ἔρια· καὶ ἐπὶ μὲν τοῦ ἐργάτου, παρὰ τὴν ἔραν, τὴν γῆν, κατὰ μετάθεσιν τοῦ α εἰς ι, ἢ παρὰ τὸ ἔρις καὶ τὸ θὴς, ὃ σημαίνει τὸν μισθωτόν· ἐπὶ δὲ τῆς γυναικὸς, ἀπὸ τοῦ ἔριον γέγονεν ἔριθος. Κυρίως δὲ ὁ τὴν γῆν ἐργαζόμενος ἐργάτης ἐπὶ μισθῷ.
Translation (En)
Erithos "day-labourer". It means the worker, and the woman doing wool works. And for the male worker, it comes from era "earth", by ahcnge of /a/ to /I/, or from eris "quarrel" and thēs "serf", which means the hired one. And for the female servant, erithos comes from erion "wool". The proper meaning is "land worker", worker for a salary

Compositional etymology building on the derivational one by ἔρις (see ἔριθος / ἔρις). The θής is a hired worker, like the ἔριθος. So, the word was assumed to provide the last syllable of the lemma, and to be the second member of the compound
