Quotation

(Theodoridis) κωτίλος· πλεονασμός ἐστι τοῦ ω· κτίλος γὰρ ἦν, ὁ κριός, ὅπερ καταστρέφει εἰς τὸ πρᾶον· †πρέπεται† γὰρ τῇ πραότητι †τὸ κολακεύειν†.

Translation (En)

Kōtilos "chattering". Addition of the /ō/, for it was ktilos "ram", which turns to "gentle". […]

Comment

Derivational etymology, starting from the adjective κτίλος "tame", which itself is assumed to represent an extended meaning of κτίλος "ram". In Orion's wording, "tame" is expressed by πρᾶον. The end of the explanation is difficult to understand. Probably the idea is that being gentle leads to talking gently and in a flattering fashion
