Quotation

Translation (En)

Drosos "dew", by dropping of the /I/, the one rushing forward (sooumenē) from Zeus (apo Dios), a *diosos, as it were, and with addition of </r/> and syncope of /I/, drosos

Comment

Compositional etymology taking as its starting point an inflected form in the genitive (Διός). This provides the first "member". The end of the word is deduced from Homeric compounds in -(σ)σοος, belonging with σεύομαι. Then several formal changes are required: loss of /I/, insertion of /r/, and (not mentioned in Orion's wording), loss of one /s/. Semantically, deriving the word for "dew" from the name of the Sky-god is conceivable, in so far as Zeus is responsible for all the meteorological phenomena.
