Translation (En)
Aulos "pipe": because it shouts (ausai) and produces a sound. ‘Aue d' Arēs’ ("and Arēs shouted", Il. 20.51). From aō "to blow", with addition of /u/.

Comment
Derivational etymology. From ἄω, thematic form of ἄημι "to blow", is derived a αὔω "to shout" (abstracted from ἀϋτή "cry"). Αὐλός is derived now from this αὔω, as the "sonorous" one, now directly from ἄω, either as the "blowing" one or as that in which one blows. See αὐλός / αὔω
