Comment

Derivational etymology. Formally, it requires a formal change, that of the initial consonant. Semantically, it is rather far-fetched. The lemma  is assumed to be the goal of the etymon—things sink to the bottom

Parallels

ibid., p. 291 (Βυθός· π⟦αρὰ τὸ δύ⟧ειν τὸν δύνοντα λίθον ἐν αὐτῷ ἢ καὶ σίδη⟦ρον⟧ καὶ μ⟦όλιβ⟧δ⟦ον⟧ καὶ μὴ ⟦ὁρᾶσθαι⟧)

Modern etymology

Unknown (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has βυθός as the name of the bottom of the sea, a lake, or a riverbed
