Derivational descriptive etymology. The pupil is the shining part of the eye. The etymology relies on the identity of the first syllable of the lemma with the last syllable of the etymon, which is a rather uncommon type. The interesting point in the explanation is that the etymology seems to start from the inflected accusative form αἴγλην, to which, once the /ai/ has been disposed of, a simple -η is added. The wording "addition of -η" means that the /n/ already was in the etymon, therefore, that the etymon is an inflected form—this is not unusual (compare ἀγρός / ἀήρ, ἀρήν / ἀρά, θάλασσα / ἅλς, πόντος / πᾶς). In that case, the accusative form was provided by the traditional formulation παρὰ + Acc. "from X", indicating the etymon. Παρὰ τὴ αἴγλην provided (αι)γλην.
