Quotation

Βδέλλα, Ἀττικοὶ <βδάλλειν> λέγουσι τὸ ἀμέλγειν. ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ βδέλλω βδέλλα. τοῖς ἀμέλγουσι ἔοικεν ἡ βδέλλα ἐν τῷ σπᾶν τοῦ αἵματος (NB: Orion has Ἀττικοὶ βλάττειν λέγουσι, clearly a mistake of the copyist: later sources deriving from Orion have the correct βδάλλειν)

Translation (En)

Bdella "leech". In Attic <bdallein> means "to milk" (amelgein). And from bdellō comes Della. The leech is similar to milking people because it draws the blood out.

Comment

Derivational etymology relying on the formal similarity of the two words and implying a change of the vowel. The lemma is a noun and the etymon a verb: derivational etymologies of Greek grammarians mostly go from verb to noun.
