Quotation

δῆλον δ’ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πετεηνοῦ συγκέκοπται τὸ πτηνόν.

Translation (En)

Obviously ptēnon "bird" is derived by syncope from peteēnon "bird".

Comment

Eustathius assumes that πετεηνός is the etymon of πτηνός whereas in other sources πετεηνός is derived from πετεινός /πετηνός by insertion of a vowel (see πετεινός / πέτομαι). He reverses the direction of the derivation but still assumes that both words come from πέτομαι "to fly".

Modern etymology

Derivative of πέτομαι "to fly", from PIE *path2-. Belongs with ποτάομαι "to fly", πτερόν "wing", πτηνός "winged", ὑψιπετής "high-flying" (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has πετεινός "rooster", πετεινάρι "cockerel", but the Homeric form is not preserved
