Comment
Derivational etymology starting from a (ghost) thematic participle of ἵστημι. Then a suffix is added and an extra letter is inserted. This is the etymology usually provided for the synonym στῆθος (see στῆθος / ἵστημι): the chest is the body part which stands upright. The etymology could also account for στέρνον, which has the same initial sequence [st]: it is not clear whether this is a spontaneous etymology or an etymology transferred from στῆθος to its synonym στέρνον. The transfer is clear in the second notice of the Gudianum Στέρνοις, στήθεσι, διότι ἕστηκεν ἀσάλευτον, because διότι ἕστηκεν ἀσάλευτον is the etymology given by Orion for στῆθος.
