Okhlos "trouble": from eillō "to whirl", eilos and okhlos. Or from the troubling (okhlēsin). Or from akhlus "mist". *akhlos and okhlos by change of the [a] into [o].

The etymology reverses the real relationship between ὄχλος and ὀχλέω, which is a denominative of ὄχλος. However, it was customary for Greek etymologists, after Philoxenus, to take as their starting point a verb: this could explain why the derivation goes from the verb to the noun.
