Quotation

φιάλη: διὰ τοῦ ι· παρὰ γὰρ τὸ πίω πιάλη ὡς νείφω νεφέλη καὶ φιάλη ἢ παρὰ τὸ πίω καὶ τὸ ἅλις, ἀφ’ ἧς ἐστι πιεῖν ἅλις τουτέστιν ἀθρόως διὰ τὸ ἐξεπληρῶσθαι

Translation (En)

Phialē "cup", with an [I]. Because it comes from piō, *pialē, as neiphō "to snow", nephelē "cloud", and phialē, or from piō and halis, from which it is possible to drink enough, that is, in quantity because it is filled.

Comment

Derivation implying a formal manipulation, the loss of [i], as between νείφω and νέφος (see νέφος / νείφω). The end of the word is understood as a suffix. The cloud is etymologized as that which produces snow.

Modern etymology

Νεφέλη belongs with νέφος "cloud", not with νείφω "to snow" and is cognate with Lat. nebula "cloud", Germ. Nebel, Ved. nábhas- "cloud" (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

The word is still used in Modern Greek as a learned word to designate the 'cloud', while it also exists as a proper name. There also is the word νεφέλωμα.
