Comment

Very nice etymology parsing, as usual for words with initial ἀ-, the word as a compound with the privative or (here) intensive prefix. The second element is identified as "to see, to know": the singer or the poet is the one who knows well. The etymology may be much older than its first explicit attestation (see Parallels). The reference to the knowledge of the singing muse or of the singer inspired by the muse is frequent, starting with Homer (see Il. 2.485sqq, Od. 1.337-8), and this probably played a role in the analysis of ἀείδω as a compound of οἶδα. The etymology was widely accepted in antiquity. One slight divergence can be found in the scholia to the Ars grammatica by Dionysius Thrax where the verb is assumed to mean "say" and not "now", although the translation refers to the traditional explanation "much knowing"

Modern etymology

The most likely etymology, despite Beekes' skepticism, reconstructs a reduplicated present from root *h2ued- "to speak", found in αὐδή "voice" and in Ved. vádati "to speak"

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has ωδή "ode" (< ᾠδή < ἀοιδή) but the verb is lost
