Κεραυνὸς, βροντὴ ἢ χάλαζα, παρὰ τὸ καίειν τὴν ἔραν, ἤγουν τὴν γῆν.

Translation (En)

Keraunos "thunderbolt": thunder and hail, from "to burn" (kaiein) the soil (eran), that is to say, the earth

Comment

Compositional etymology, which appears under the form of an elliptic etymology: the real etymon αὔω is substituted by a more frequent synonym καίω. This etymology yields *εραυνός, and the initial /k/ is probably assumed to be an additional consonant that has no incidence on meaning

Modern etymology

Derivative of an old r/n-stem form the PIE root *k̑erh2- "to smash, to damage" (Beekes, EDG)

MG still has κεραυνός
