Compositional etymology. The second member of the compound is assumed to be the verb εἶμι, in a form like the participle ἰών (this would provide a ready analysis for the participle of the lemma, ὀπυίων). Here the verb stands in the aorist, ἐλθεῖν, which destroys the formal link since εἶμι is a suppletive verb. The first member is assumed to be an old word meaning "sight", probably by reference to the fact that the maid was unveiled only when she was led to the groom's house, after the marriage had been contracted.
