Derivational etymology, based on the customary disposition of plants in a garden, with the vegetables occupying an end of the garden. The etymology is already found in Porphyry (3 AD) in the form of an elliptic etymology, where πέρασι is substituted by its synonym ἔσχατοις (Quaestionum Homericarum ad Iliadem pertinentium reliquiae, 24.221: πρασιὰν δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν λαχανευομένων τόπων πράσοις, ἅπερ καὶ ἐπ’ ἐσχάτοις φυτεύουσιν "πρασιά is named after the places where leeks are grown – leeks which grow at the end of the garden")
