Comment

Derivational etymology. The etymon is a near-synonym of the lemma, both meaning "to utter a sound". The aorist εἶπον was derived by Greek grammarians from a ghost present ἔπω, actually used one by Nicander. From this ἔπω is derived a *ἐπύω, and a lengthening of /e/ provides ἠπύω
