Comment

Derivational etymology, deriving the name from a metaphorical denomination of the underworld as the "lowest" part. The dead are those who are "in the lowest part" of the world. Semantically, this etymology is similar to the usual one by "in earth" (see ἔνεροι / ἐν + ἔρα). Formally, it is difficult, as the only common point between the lemma and the etymon is the syllable /ne/. Accordingly, this etymology requires several formal manipulations (addition of the initial vowel and one or two changes in consonants), in which Plutarch does not show any interest.
