Modern etymology
Δαψιλής belongs with δάπτω "to devour", δαπάνη "expenditure". The form is derived from the aorist stem (Beekes, EDG)

Comment
Derivational etymology: from δάπτω, the aorist is ἔδαψα, and the future δάψω, providing the sequence /daps/. What is abundant is what one can feed on. This etymology is correct by modern standards
