Quotation

Αἴθω: [Τὸ καίω] ἐκ τοῦ δαίω τὸ καίω, ὑπερβιβασμῷ αἴδω, καὶ τροπῇ τοῦ δέλτα εἰς θῆτα, αἴθω.

Translation (En)

Aithō "to kindle": from daiō "to kindle", by transposition *aidō, and by change of /d/ into /th/ aithō

Comment

Derivational etymology implying two formal changes. Since the etymon and the lemma are synonyms, the etymology is reversible (see δαίω1 / αἴθω)

Parallels

Etym. Symenonis, vol. 1, p. 136 (idem); Etym. Magnum, Kallierges, p. 32 (Αἰθιοπία: Παρὰ τὸ αἰθίοψ. Τοῦτο παρὰ τὸ αἴθω· τοῦτο παρὰ τὸ δαίω τὸ καίω ἐστὶν κατὰ τροπήν)

Modern etymology

PIE root *h2eidh- "to kindle", cognate with Skt édha- "firewood", inddhé "to indre", Lat. aedēs "dwelling place" (orig. "hearth") (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has the derivative αιθέρας and several compounds, but the verb is lost
