Quotation
Ἅζομαι, ἐστὶ χάζομαι, καὶ ἀποβολῇ τοῦ χ, ἅζομαι· ὡς λείβω εἴβω, γαῖα αἶα. οἱ δὲ καὶ τιμῶντες ὑποχωροῦσιν.
Translation (En)
Hazomai "to stand in awe of" is ‹from› khazomai "to give way", and through dropping of the [kh], hazomai, as for leibō / eibō ("to pour"), gaia / aia ("earth"). Because those who respect someone give way.

Comment
Paronymic etymology relying on the idea that a move (to give way) is the physical transcription of a thought (to respect, to fear). The phonetic manipulation is minimal, limited to the dropping of the initial consonant. However, the χ of χάζομαι is used to justify the rough breathing of ἅζομαι, with the idea that the consonant was not lost altogether since the aspiration was retained – this was an easy step in a state of language where χ was pronounced as a voiceless fricative, as in Modern Greek. Notice that the same Orion gives the same χάζομαι as the etymon for κακός (κακός / χάζομαι), with loss of the aspiration in [kh] resulting in a plain voiceless [k]
