Quotation

Φιλόξενος δὲ ἐν τῷ περὶ Ἰάδος διαλέκτου λέγει, ὅτι παρὰ τὸ κάρη γίνεται καρύπτω καὶ κορύπτω· ἐκ τούτου κορυφή

Translation (En)

Philoxenus, in his On the Ionic dialect, says that from karē "head" is derived *karuptō and koruptō "to butt with the head", and from the latter koruphē "head"

Comment

Derivational etymology starting from a derivative of κάρα. The relationship is correct from the modern point of view, but the direction of the derivation is erroneous: κορύπτω is derived from κορυφή, not the other way round. And both belong with κάρα, as correctly seen by Philoxenus.

Parallels

Etym. Genuinum AB (idem); Etym.

Modern etymology

Derivative of the name of "head", κάρα, with the same u-stem as in κόρυς "helmet" (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has κορυφή as a learned word
