Quotation

Translation (En)

Pēra "leathern pouch": clearly a *phera "carrying", as it were. Or from parērtēsthai "to hang alongside". Or, with change of the [t] into [p], a *tēra, as it were, from tēreîn "to guard".

Comment

Derivational etymology implying one formal change on the initial consonant. It is a functional etymology: the object is assumed to be named after its function, which is to guard its content.
