Quotation

Πηγή: Ἐκ τοῦ πηδῶ γέγονεν πηδή, καὶ κατὰ μετάθεσιν τοῦ δ εἰς γ πηγή.

Translation (En)

Pēgē "source": from pēdô "to leap" comes *pēdē and by change of the [d] into [g], pēgē.

Comment

Derivational descriptive etymology (the source springs forth) starting from a verb and implying one formal change. In modern terms we would say that the ghost word *πηδή, provided as an intermediate step, is a deverbal noun.

Modern etymology

Doric πᾱγᾱ́. Unknown etymology, a connection with πήγνυμι "to fix in" being semantically awkward (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has πηγή "source"
