Translation (En)
Krēnē "spring": from rheō "to flow", *rhenē, and through change of [e] into [ē] and adjunction of [k], krēnē. Or from the fact it is the head (karan) and summit (koruphēn) of the river (namatos): and as a matter of fact the springs are daughters of the rivers.

Modern etymology
Within Greek, probably related to κρουνός "spring". PIE *kr̥sneh2- (Beekes, EDG)
Persistence in Modern Greek
MG still has κρήνη as a learned word

Comment
Derivational etymology implying several formal manipulations. The spring is the flowing one.
