Quotation

γέγονε δὲ παρὰ τὸ λαλεῖν λαλαγή καὶ ἀλαλάζω

Translation (En)

Lalagē "prattle" and alalazō "to cry" come from laleîn "to talk".

Comment

The very rare word λαλαγή, found only in Oppian's Halieutica, 1.135 before the Byzantine period, is here related to the verb λαλέω, "to talk, to chat" in a notice about the ἀλαλάζω, whereas it would have been more appropriate and direct to relate the substantive to λαλαγέω, "to babble". This derivational etymology is basically correct, and modern etymology considers λαλέω and λαλαγή/λαλαγέω as related.

Modern etymology

Back-formation from λαλαγέω, itself derived from λαλέω
