Compositional etymology which seeks the justification of the name of a plant in the notion of harvesting. This could, of course, apply to many crops. The etymology implies no formal manipulation if the first element is assumed to be καλὀς and not the adverb καλῶς: the [o] undergoes elision at the morpheme boundary in adjectives. This was possible in Byzantine Greek, where compounds in καλο- appear (such as καλοκαιρινός “of the summer" in the Hippiatrica) instead of the older type in καλλι-.
