καλός· παρὰ τὸ κάζω ῥῆμα, οὗ παρακείμενος κέκασμαι καὶ μέλλων κάσω, ἀφ’ οὗ καλὸς ὄνομα.

Kalos "beautiful": from the verb *kazō, the perfect of which is kekasmai "I excel" and the future *kasō, from where the noun kalos.

Comment
Derivational etymology starting from the (invented) future of κέκασμαι. The latter was understood as meaning "to be in order" and thought to be the etymology of κόσμος (see κόσμος / κέκασμαι). What is beautiful is orderly. The derivation of καλός implies either dropping of [s] and adjunction of [l], or change of [s] into [l] but, if the explanation is by Philoxenus, the former is more likely. The same etymologies provided for κάλλος "beauty" (Choeroboscus)
