Comment
Philoxenus reduces βαίνω to the monosyllabic base *βῶ, from which he derives βωμός. This is the correct explanation from our modern point of view, and Greek scholars were aware that βωμός means primarily "step", "basis" on which one walks and quote Il. 8.441: ἅρματα δ’ ἂμ βωμοῖσι τίθει as a proof (see Parallels)
