Δόξα δὴ ἤτοι τῇ διώξει ἐπωνόμασται ἣν ἡ ψυχὴ διώκουσα τὸ εἰδέναι ὅπῃ ἔχει τὰ πράγματα πορεύεται, ὴ τῇ ἀπὸ τοῦ τόχου βολῇ. ἔοικε δὲ τοῦτο μᾶλλον.

Translation (En)

Doxa "expectation" is derived either from the diōxis “pursuit” which the soul carries on as it diōkousa “pursues” the knowledge of the nature of things, or from the shooting of the toxon “bow”; the latter is more likely (transl. Fowler).

Comment

The first etymology by diōxis "pursuit" relies on the vague phonetic similarity. The second one, which is given as preferable, plays on the mutation of the initial voiceless consonant [t] of toxon "bow" becoming a voiced [d] in doxa.

Modern etymology

Chantraine (1968, 290-1): Δόξα derives from δοκέω, meaning 'expect, think'

Persistence in Modern Greek

In MG "δόξα" is used mainly with the meanings: a) 'fame, glory and admiration that someone enjoys' and b) 'popularity'. However, with the meaning of 'opinion' it survives in compounds such as παράδοξος, ορθόδοξος (Triandafyllidis Dictionary of MG).
