Comment

Derivational etymology. In Orion's wording we have an elliptic etymology, where the real etymon, καπύω "to breathe forth", is replaced by a synonym καταπνέω "to breathe onto". This is an abridged version of the longer and older explanation found in Meletius and the Gudianum, also going back to Orion. The idea is that the animals, by their breath, create the shape of the crib. The etymon is the cause of the lemma. This etymology seems to have been misunderstood: Melletius and the Gudianum insert ἤ between the etymon *κάπος "breath" and its explanation καταπνέεσθαι, thus treating the latter as a different etymon — in other words, generating two etymologies out of one, since the explanation was mistaken for the etymon. Notice that this confusion was avoided in the Et. Magnum, which still has the original formation with *κάπος as the etymon and καταπνεομένη as the explanation of the etymon
