Translation (En)

(Orion) Erineos "wild fig-tree": from the fact the tree is willing to fight (eristikon) against the rocks and the waters. This is what Herodian and Eudaimon say

Comment

Derivational etymology. The wild fig-tree is etymologized as a "fighting", "wrangling" plant because it grows in arid and rocky places. The derivation from ἔρις is formally straightforward.

The etymology may be implicit in a fragment by Lynceus of Samos (4th c. BC) reported by Athenaeus, Deipnosophistae 3.8 Kaibel (Λυγκεὺς ἐν ἐπιστολαῖς σύγκρισιν ποιούμενος τῶν Ἀθήνησι γινομένων καλλίστων πρὸς τὰ Ῥοδιακά. γράφει δὲ οὕτως. ‘τὰ δὲ ἐρινεὰ τοῖς Λακωνικοῖς ὥστε συκάμινα σύκοις δοκεῖν ἐρίζειν)

Modern etymology

Probably a Pre-Greek word, as may phytonyms (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek
