Comment
Derivational etymology, showing as many others that for Greek scholars it was not a problem to derive a simple word from a compound verb. The preverb ἐν- of ἐλλείπω, with assimilation of the /n/, is assumed to account for the /l/ or ἐλπίς. The derivation is ἐλλείπω → *ἐλλειπίς → ἐλπίς with two syncopes. The semantic relationship between the etymon and the lemma is causal: lack is the cause of hope
