Elpis "hope". It is a *helkis, as it were, from the fact that it drags us along (parelkein) time. Or from the fact that those who hope lack something (elleipein), a *ellip<I>s, as it were, and by syncope elpis

Comment
Derivational etymology requiring one formal change, from /k/ to /p/. The loss of aspiration is not commented upon, whether it reflects a psilotic stage or the unaspirated form was taken from compound verbs like παρέλκω. The function of hope is to make man wait for something and go through life trying to reach his goals, therefore it is proverbial wisdom that hope is driving/dragging man
