Comment

Derivational etymology. The tree is etymologized by reference to the bark, which can be stripped off. This etymology is accepted by several modern scholars

Modern etymology

Δρῦς "oak" is a specialized meaning of the inherited word for "tree", which is the etymon of δόρυ "tree, trunk, beam". Cognate with Goth. triu "tree", Ved. dā́ru- "tree". PIE *dor-u- (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG still has δρυς as a learned word
