Translation (En)

Dendron "tree": from derō "to flay"

Comment

Derivational etymology, the detail of which remains unclear. A reduplication is probably assumed, but this is not explicit. The tree is etymologized after the fact that it can be "flayed" like an animal, with the bark being stripped off like a skin

Mauropus, Etymologica nominum 399 (δένδρου δὲ φλοιὸν ὡς δορὰν τέκτων δέρει)

Modern etymology

Δένδρον is a reduplicated form of the old IE noun for *tree" found in δόρυ "tree, trunk, beam", δρῦς "oak", Ved. dā́ru- "tree", Goth. triu "tree" (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG has δέντρο. The Ancient Greek form δενδρο- is still found in learned compounds
