Quotation

Δένδρον: διὰ τὸ δεόντως ἱδρῦσθαι.

Translation (En)

Dendron "tree": because it is properly (deontōsseated (hidrûsthai)

Comment

Compositional etymology relying on the observation that the tree is rooted in the ground, hence "well seated", "with proper foundations". A syncope is required in δεον- > δεν-, and the initial /I/ of ἱδρύω is dropped.

Parallels

Orion, Etymologicum (Excerpta e cod. regio 2610), p. 177 (Δένδρον· διὰ τὸ δεόντως ἵδρασθαι); Etym. Gudianum, delta, p. 345 (Δένδρον· παρὰ τὸ δεόντως ἱδρῦσθαι ἢ παρὰ τὸ ἁδρύνεσθαι)

Modern etymology

Δένδρον is a reduplicated form of the old IE noun for *tree" found in δόρυ "tree, trunk, beam", δρῦς "oak", Ved. dā́ru- "tree", Goth. triu "tree" (Beekes, EDG)

Persistence in Modern Greek

MG has δέντρο. The Ancient Greek form δενδρο- is still found in learned compounds
