Comment
Composiitonla etymology. The first syllable is assumed to be the intensive prefix λα-, and the second member a syncopated form of τηρέω "to watch over". The wages are thus the aim, that which the worker keeps looking at: the etymon involves neither the hired man nor the wages, only the process of looking at something. See also λάτρις / λα- + τρέω
