Quotation
Translation (En)
Oxuō: from oxus "sharp", and the latter, as from kheō "to pour" comes khoos "pouring", khoüs "conge" [capacity measure], ans from pleō "to sail" platos "breadth" and platus "broad", so from xeō "to scrape" xoos "scraping", xoüs, and by metathesis oxus. It is the opposite of amblus "blunt"

Modern etymology
Belongs with ἄκρος "highest", ἄκρις "summit". Probably an o-grade derivative of PIE *h2ek- "sharp", despite Beekes, skepticism
Persistence in Modern Greek
MG still has οξύ "acid", οξυγόνο "oxygen" and compounds in οξυ-

Comment
Derivational etymology semantically similar to the one deriving ὀξύς from ξύω, "sharp" is what has been scraped.
